Anxiety Attacks Vs Panic Attacks
The difference: Anxiety Attacks and Panic Attacks
While many talk of anxiety attack and panic attack as being one and the same, there are some differences. The main difference is the duration of the attack and the intensity. While anxiety attack symptoms are less hi-stress, they tend to last longer than the power-packed panic symptoms which are far more intense. Usually an anxiety attack comes on more gradually than a panic attack
Anxiety Attacks
An anxiety attack is often referred to by many as a panic attack. It is an unexpected period of sudden and intense fright or fear. While the attacks are often irrational the person with the disorder believes they are in extreme danger or at great risk. The person suffering the attack will feel they are about to faint or close to dying.
Sufferers of anxiety attacks report the following anxiety attack symptoms:
- Discomfort or pain in the chest
- Dizziness or vertigo
- Upset stomach and nausea
- Loss of control and unable to think
- Cold or hot flashes
- Heart palpitations and feelings they may be having a heart attack
- Shallow breathing
- Shakes and trembling
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It helps us deal with and prepare for certain situations such as giving a speech or studying for an exam by giving us an added spark to cope. Generally, it helps us cope with life’s stresses. It is when anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations that it becomes a disabling disorder. Anxiety disorder is characterized as having anxiety feelings that tend to ‘always be there’ and make people want to isolate themselves from society hampering everyday activities with others.
Panic Attacks
A panic attack, on the other hand, does not carry with it the ‘always there’ association. In fact, panic episodes generally burst forth with no warning, quickly overwhelming the sufferer and are more intensity than an anxiety attack. The attack peaks after roughly10 minutes or so, and can last up to 30 minutes.
Similar to anxiety attacks about four of the symptoms listed below will generally make an appearance during a panic attack:
Shallow breathing, even to the point of suffocation sensation...
- Increased heart rate
- Tightness of chest
- Shaking, trembling, sweating
- Choking sensation
- Upset stomach and nausea
- Vertigo and dizziness
- Surreal feelings
- Loss of Control, especially of mental faculties
- Death coming on
- Numbness
- Cold or hot flashes
People suffering from a panic attack often believe there is something physically wrong with them as the feelings are so intense. They will often feel they have a real and undiagnosed illness. Being told that there is nothing physically wrong with them may only serve to heighten the anxiety they feel about their attack.
Anyone suffering from these symptoms, whether they are the less intense anxiety attack symptoms or that of the power-packed panic attack, need not suffer alone.
